Four colours of the sea

Larimar is valued by its colour, and the deeper the blue, the rarer the stone. We group our pieces by shade, so you can easily find yours.

Selected pieces

No two larimars are alike. Pattern and colour make every piece unique. Prices are available on request.

The blue treasure of the Caribbean

Larimar is a rare blue gemstone found almost exclusively in the Dominican Republic. The most important deposit lies in the province of Barahona in the country’s southwest, mainly around Los Chupaderos.

The mineral

Mineralogically, larimar is a rare blue variety of the mineral pectolite. Its colours range from pale blue and turquoise to intense blue, often with white, cloud-like or wave-like patterns.

The name

The name was coined in the 1970s by Miguel Méndez. He combined his daughter’s name, Larissa, with the Spanish word “mar” (sea).

The craft

Today larimar is mainly made into jewellery and handicrafts. For many artisans in Barahona, this work is an important source of income.

Mar de Janet

A little piece of the Caribbean to take with you.

Mar de Janet brings together the Caribbean Sea, Dominican identity and the elegance of fine jewellery. At its heart is larimar, whose blue recalls the sea and tells a story of origin, nature and exclusivity.

Our pieces are made for people looking for a special piece of jewellery with a story behind it. For yourself, or as a gift for someone special.

Caring for your larimar

Larimar is a natural stone with a Mohs hardness of 4.5 to 5, which makes it softer than quartz. With a little care, its blue lasts for a long time.

Store it separately

Keep each piece in a soft pouch so that harder stones and metals can’t scratch the surface.

Clean it gently

A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough. Keep perfume, creams, chlorinated water and cleaning products away from the stone.

Keep it out of the sun

Don’t leave larimar in direct sunlight or high heat for long periods, or its blue may fade over time.

Reserve your piece

Every piece is one of a kind. Tell us which one you’d like and we’ll set it aside for you. We’ll get back to you with the price, details and shipping options. We’re also happy to help you choose a gift or design a piece just for you.
